Windows Storage Spaces is cool, but over reaching with software RAID. Who even has jbod’s without RAID controllers laying around? Not sure if buying dumb drive chassis to be software RAID’s is really going to sell. Thinking Windows Storage Spaces would do better to focus 100% on being a great SMB3, iSCSI, and maybe even FC Target server, and drop the software RAID backend.

Even for servers with local disk would rather have a RAID card than software RAID. Think Microsoft could have a competitor to NetApp if Windows Storage Spaces could be sold as an appliance with the backend RAID “Not” managed by software. Find a RAID card Microsoft and you could own the SMB3 NAS market!
